LATENT FAITH
James 2:14: What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
The Scriptures clearly teach an “Obedient faith.” For us to say that we have faith and not exercise it is incomprehensible. Faith without works is, at best, latent. Each of us has been given a measure of faith.(1) However, until that faith is exercised, it has nothing but potential power. If latent faith can save us, then there is no need for placing that faith in Christ. We are told that without faith, it is impossible to please God.(2) Let me ask, does the latent measure of faith the unbeliever has please God? It is clear, obedient faith pleases God - faith that works by means of believing, trusting, and obeying. How can one read the book of James and not clearly see faith’s application? It is not an epistle of straw; it is thus saith the Lord. Allow me to somewhat paraphrase our text: “What does latent faith profit, my brethren. If someone says he has faith but does not use it, can that faith save him?”
